Longtime paddlesports and outdoor retailer Next Adventures, based in Portland, Oregon, is shutting down. The company announced it is closing its doors after 28 years because the founders, Deek Heykamp and Bryan Knudsen, are retiring.
“We’re not getting any younger and there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world,” Heykamp told Oregon’s KATU News.

What began in 1997 as a 1,500-square-foot shop quickly became the go-to store in Portland for all things outside, with an emphasis on paddling. It grew to four stores in the region, all of which are closing. Heykamp thanked their amazing customers, staff, and community and added they’re closing the doors with gratitude and pride.
The good news: they’re holding an “everything must go” sale that will end when they’re out of inventory. The “everything-must-go bonanza” is sell ingoff the remaining inventory from all four locations, putting paddlers trolling their wares on Facebook in a frenzy, with posts about such classic boats as the Photon and Fury and too many slalom kayaks to mention. The sale is expected to last into fall until all inventory is sold. The closure will be marked by one last celebration this fall as well to send the founders off and celebrate the store’s legacy.
