The Colorado river running industry gained a new advocate with the state naming former American Whitewater exec Nathan Fey as its new Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry Names Deputy Director.
“We are excited to have someone with Nathan’s depth and knowledge of Colorado outdoors on our team,” said Luis Benitez, Director of the Colorado Office of Outdoor Recreation. “He has been an active member of our Advisory Council for three years and has provided vital input to the creation of the Confluence Accords and the coalition of states, bringing together a 10 state coalition of outdoor recreation industry offices. With this working knowledge of our industry, we know he will hit the ground running.”

Fey, tasked with growing stakeholder participation in the state’s $62 billion outdoor industry, has been in the outdoor arena for 20 years. For the past 12 years, he worked as the Regional Director of the Colorado River Stewardship Program at American Whitewater where he was responsible for program development, fundraising, grant writing and growing the network of affiliates from four regional paddling clubs to over 20. Concurrently, he served as a public policy consultant at Berbur Consulting, where he worked with the Colorado Office of Outdoor Recreation helping to create the Member Pledge, Regional Partnership Guidelines and the Advisory Council protocol.

Prior to the Colorado River Stewardship Program, Fey served as the Coordinator of the San Miguel Watershed Coalition and worked at Ridgway Independent Guide Service, where he was a fly-fishing guide and kayak instructor.

He has been recognized as a partner in Conservation by the US Department of the Interior and received a three-year leadership grant from the WIlliam C. Kenney Foundation for the support of innovation, collaboration and solutions to address water resource issues in the Uncompahgre Valley.

Fey has a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
