The Northern Forest Canoe Trail’s (NFCT) team of paddlers recently rallied together to raise paddles and funds in support of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail in the Adirondacks.

The Adirondack Canoe Classic race, also known as the 90-Miler, covers the first ninety miles of the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail, the nation’s longest water trail. The race course begins in Old Forge and journeys to Saranac Lake, NY.

The eight person voyager canoe set out on the three day mission on September 13, 2013, with the goal of raising $10,000 in funds to support their three core programs: Northern Forest Explorers, Trail Stewardship and Trail Towns. These adventures offer the opportunity for paddlers to develop a kinship with their local lakes and rivers. Spokesperson for NFCT, Kate Williams, said, “Our goal is to raise funds to get more kids outside paddling and help promote and maintain this classic canoe route for generations to come.” Williams describes the trail and the Adirondack Canoe Classic as a great way to connect paddlers with the protection and stewardship of places they love to paddle, promoting access for all.

The Adirondack Canoe Classic has been held since 1983 and attracts participants from around the world. The trail was established to connect people to the trail’s natural environment, human heritage, and contemporary communities. In 2011 the trail was named “Best Canoe Trail” by Outside Magazine and in 2012 the magazine named the trail a “Best East Coast Adventure.”
