Werner Paddles was honored to once again receive the Accessory Manufacturer of the Year Award presented by Canoe & Kayak Magazine. The award is voted upon by 384 retail shops and goes to the easiest accessory manufacturer to work with.
“I think they voted for us because we’re really easy to do business with, we have a solid product line and great sales reps in the field that help to pull product through the store,” says Jim Miller, Werner’s Marketing Manager.
Werner’s been in the business of paddles since 1964 and their history reads a bit like the American dream of the outdoor industry. There’s the industrious and financially strapped Dad, Werner Furrer Sr. who made the paddles, the crafty mom Martha, who made the lifejackets, and the driven and talented son Werner Jr., who sold paddles to finance his way to the 1972 Olympics. Since the business was founded, Werner has expanded to 90 employees but the business philosophy is still largely the same. Make a good product and treat people right. Some employees have been with the company for 21 years. This is the third time Werner has received the the award.
“It goes to show that we are firing on all eight cylinders. It takes the entire team; shipping, production, accounting, R&D, sales and marketing to get it right in partnering with our dealers. We have had a good year and are looking forward to generating more innovative ways to help our dealers succeed in an increasingly competitive market,” says Miller.
The awards were presented at this past August’s Outdoor Retail Trade Show. Other winners included Native Watercraft as Boat Manufacturer of the Year. Not to be left out, manufacturers were given the chance to recognize their favorite paddling shop which was bestowed upon Oregon based, Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe. Werner Paddles is the leading manufacturer of high quality kayak, canoe, and stand up paddles, operating near the banks of the Skykomish River in Sultan, WA.
