The Reign of Dane: Dane Takes K1 Worlds Crown for Men, Britain’s O’Hara Nabs Top Spot for Gals

For today’s top freestyle kayakers, the reign of Dane is proving to be a pain. Dane Jackson wrapped up his first-ever Men’s Kayak World Freestyle Championships gold medal at the Nantahala Outdoor Center this weekend, with a blistering, high-flying, high-scoring performance leaving other competitors in his wake. For the women, Britain’s Claire O’Hara proved equally domineering, securing the title for the second time running…

In all, the U.S. team fared quite favorably on its home-field Nantahala court, winning a combined six out of a possible eight gold medals on the newly built wave in the Nantahala Gorge near Bryson City, N.C. O’Hare, meanwhile, added to her K1 tally with a win in the women’s Squirt boat event as well. At age 19, Jordan Poffenberger came away with two gold medals in the OC1 and C1 Men’s events.

For the men, it was Dane’s day with three medals overall, including a gold in the K1 Men, thanks to a series of 1,500-plus point rides, a silver in the Squirt boat and bronze in the C1. In the K1 event, he bested pops EJ, brother-in-law Nick Troutman and 2011 champion James Bebbington of Britain, who missed the cut for semi-finals by a mere 26 points. Taking second for the men was Slovakia’s Peter Csonka and Poland’s Tomasz Czaplicki.

Clay Wright won the Men’s Squirt boat, edging out Jackson by 160 points. In the Junior events four different nations made the podium — USA, France, Spain and Great Britain — with the USA’s Rowan Stuart winning the K1 Junior Women’s Gold and Hunter Katich taking the K1 Junior Men’s title.
