Sanuk Launches Biggest Footwear Project Since the Original Sidewalk Surfer

We’ve been kicking it après-paddle in our Sanuks since the old days, when things were simpler and these simple shoes represented what we were all looking for in the outdoor industry and in our footwear – authenticity.

Well, the brand has tried a few things over the years, and while they’ve remained true to their original mission of simple comfort and après functionality, this week they’ve launched what designers are calling their biggest initiative of the year, the new Chiba Quest.

We had a chance to test drive this latest iteration of the classic sidewalk surfer this summer up in Aspen, Colorado — perfect for slipping into after SUPing on the Roaring Fork and kicking back in the park with a tub of microbrews from Aspen Brewery and some cornhole — and caught up with Sanuk GM Magnus Wedhammar for some insights into the launch. A sleek, stylish and anatomically ripped updated Sidewalk Surfer almost feels like going barefoot. Sanuk also holds the patent for the three-paneled construction of the shoe.

Why is the Chiba Quest an important initiative for Sanuk?

It was important for Sanuk to evolve the Sidewalk Surfer franchise because our consumers desire travel, exploration and epic adventures. We want to create product that enables them to explore freely. With this new product offering, we designed the perfect companion for the journey to your happy place.

How does it hold true to the brand ethos and the original Sidewalk Surfer?

The Chiba Quest is built with the same core intentions as the original Sidewalk Surfer. Maximum comfort, stability, support, simplicity in design, and the easy slip on feature allows the consumer to feel a sense of freedom in movement that other footwear does not.

What are the features outdoor folks will care about most?

The Chiba Quest is easy to slip on and off, it’s very flexible, packable, and machine washable. It also features a rubber outsole with flex grooves for improved traction on any surface.

What is the inspiration behind the style and colors?

The colors and patterns were inspired by some of the original designs from the Sidewalk Surfer. We also highlight our iconic green color way on the footbeds and heel tabs that our brand is known for.

Now put down your phone, grab another brew, and enjoy being outdoors.
