Necky and Ocean Kayaks Support the Breast Cancer Fund

We all have women in our lives who are potentially at risk for breast cancer. Mothers, sisters, wives, and girlfriends. The numbers tell a sobering tale. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. No paddler is immune, even the reports of men with breast cancer are on the rise.

As we head into Breast Cancer Awareness Month with these statistics in mind, it’s important to note that while October is annually a time of education, understanding and support, the battle against this deadly disease is waged twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. As part of their commitment to eradicate breast cancer, Necky Kayaks and Ocean Kayak donate one percent of the gross sales from their women’s specific kayaks to the Breast Cancer Fund, the leading national organization working to identify and eliminate the environmental causes of the disease.

“We are very grateful to our likeminded supporters, like Necky and Ocean Kayak, who are helping our efforts to prevent breast cancer,” said Julie Homan, Cause Marketing Manager for the Breast Cancer Fund. “Partnerships such as this provide not only important financial support but also much-needed awareness about the link between toxic chemicals in our environment and increased rates of breast cancer.”

Since the program’s inception in 2002, Necky Kayaks and Ocean Kayak have donated nearly $85,000 in cash and product to the Breast Cancer Fund. Necky Kayaks donates proceeds from its popular Eliza™ series kayaks, while Ocean Kayak’s donation is derived from sales of Venus 10™ and Venus 11™ kayaks. Both brands look forward to continuing the support in 2011.

“Breast cancer touches virtually all of us in one way or another during our lifetimes,” said Sara Knies, Marketing Director for Necky Kayaks and Ocean Kayak. “However, through the tireless efforts of organizations like the Breast Cancer Fund and many others, there’s hope and support for countless individuals and families facing this disease.
