AIRE and Outcast: Two Brands, Same River DNA

To the untrained eye, AIRE and Outcast Sporting Gear might look like competitors sharing a river. But spend five minutes digging into the story behind both brands, and a very different picture emerges. While some companies are built around a product, theirs were built around a love of water. Employee-owned, they’re connected by one thing: water. “Water is essential to our lives, our recreation, and it’s the reason we are a business today,” says AIRE/Outcast’s Alex Aldecoa. “Two brands, two communities, but one shared obsession with making the best boats on the water, period.”

Here’s how it all came together.

Where It All Started

AIRE: Back in 1989, four whitewater enthusiasts, Alan Hamilton, Greg Ramp, Kris Walker, and Dennis Hill, introduced AIRE’s first four production boats: the Lynx, Wildcat, Cougar, and Panther. They named their company Argonaut Inflatables Research and Engineering (AIRE) and, like the Argonauts of legend, set out  to build one of the most respected names in whitewater. From the very beginning, the standard was set high. AIRE boats are welded and sewn, never glued. Because it’s not a matter of if glue will fail, but when. Every boat that leaves the factory is handcrafted from premium materials, meaning no two are exactly alike. Not a flaw, but craftsmanship, backed by an industry-leading 10-year no-fault warranty to prove it.

outcastEnter Outcast — A Natural Extension: By 1995, AIRE’s expertise in building bomber boats was undeniable so they took it to the fishing world. Three boats launched that year: the Fat Cat, the PAC 650, and the PAC 800. They were so confident in their construction that they offered that same 10-year warranty right out of the gate. What started as AIRE expanding into fishing eventually grew into something bigger. A full fishing brand with its own identity and its own loyal following. Outcast Sporting Gear was born, purpose-built for anglers who love water, just in a different way. Fly fishers who wade into rivers before sunrise. Float tubers who spend days drifting stillwater lakes chasing the perfect rise. People who, like Outcast’s designers, can’t imagine a life spent far from the water. Because for Outcast anglers, access is everything. The ability to reach the water others can’t, float stretches that bank anglers can only dream about, and find fish in places that stay untouched all season long.

So they’re two distinct brands with two distinct audiences. But one shared love of water and one roof.

outcastSame Passion, Different Water

What makes the AIRE/Outcast partnership so powerful isn’t just the shared history, it’s the shared philosophy. Both brands are built on the same commitment to quality and the same belief that every angler and paddler deserves a boat they can trust on the water. Outcast’s Pro Series (PAC) rafts carry that same AIRE DNA welded and sewn, never glued, and backed by the industry-leading 10-year no-fault warranty. The rest of the Outcast lineup is built overseas, but don’t let that fool you; every boat still carries a strong warranty and the same dedication to getting it right that has defined this brand family from day one. The Outcast PAC 1300 is the perfect example of both worlds coming together. It’s a fully rigged, ready-to-fish river package built on the foundation of the AIRE Super Puma. AIRE’s legendary build quality underneath, Outcast’s fishing expertise on top. Two brands working together to deliver something neither could have done as well alone.

Employee-owned, both AIRE and Outcst are connected by one thing: water.

For over 30 years we’ve been building innovative products for people who love the water, and we look forward to continuing that tradition for at least 30 more,” adds Aldecoa, adding that the same craftsmanship that goes into their boats has now found its way into a third chapter of their story: AIRE Environmental, protecting the very waterways they’ve built their brand and lives around. “Whether it’s an AIRE or an Outcast on the water, the same passion, the same quality, and the same love of water went into building it. Because that’s all we’ve ever known how to do.”
