World Championship Spots on the Line at Vail Mountain Games Pacifico Kayak Cross

The GoPro Mountain Games Pacifico Kayak Cross has secured a coveted spot in the international competitive landscape for 2026, becoming an official qualifying event for the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Oklahoma City this July. The designation marks a significant elevation for the head-to-head whitewater sprint competition, connecting the Mountain Games directly to the sport’s highest competitive tier as kayak cross continues its rapid ascent following its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

Now in its third decade, the Mountain Games began in 2002 as a local whitewater event before evolving into a four-day celebration of adventure sports each June in Vail.

The festival draws thousands of professional and amateur athletes across 11 disciplines and more than 30 competitions, with over $135,000 in total prize purse distributed annually.
The Kayak Cross format remains unchanged—kayakers race head-to-head through a series of elimination rounds until a winner emerges. But the prize has expanded beyond bragging rights: top male and female finishers will earn automatic qualification spots for Worlds, with two additional Olympic Spirit Award positions available.

The Oklahoma City connection carries added weight. The same venue will host canoe slalom and kayak cross events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, making this qualification pathway a direct line to the LA28 Olympic venue.
