A recent IG post from filmmaker Scott Gaffney brought back to light a long-forgotten era of running whitewater…on skis.
And the drumroll, please…
“Spring has sprung and creeks are flowing, so it seems like the time is right to follow up my Mom’s segment from my film,“1999,” with this one from the same flick.
Well before they achieved notoriety in the ski world, Shane McConkey and Robb Gaffney pioneered a gnarly fusion of skiing and kayaking. The sport was raw, abusive, addictive and visionary. For a short run in the early 90s, Shane and Robb were unquestionably the world’s preeminent ex-stream skiers.
The sport was raw, abusive, addictive and visionary.

Then, as tends to happen, “the hype blew up” and—not wanting to see the soul sucked dry from a beloved sport they’d brought to life—both walked away.
This segment just scratched the surface of how it all went down for two former stream skiing icons. RIP in peace, legends.
