Wrapping up a weekend of fun and races at the 2013 Yampa River Festival (Info: www.friendsoftheyampa.com), on Monday, June 3, Steamboat Springs, Colo., is the place to be for the eighth annual Paddling Life Creek Race, on Class IV-V Fish Creek. Watch the best men and women kayakers in the world compete in three-minute-long Class V course for cash, prizes and year-long bragging rights.

The event will be followed by a post-event party featuring local bands, beer and other surprises. Last year’s event was a raging success for competitors and spectators alike, garnering TV from Resort Sports Network.

Events

• 3 p.m. Registration/Practice Runs

• 5 p.m. Fish Creek Race – Middle Fish Creek (Note: park alongside Mt. Werner Blvd, NOT on the road to the put-in) One mile of seat-of-the-pants, Class IV-V continuous whitewater.

• 7 p.m. Paddling Life’s Après Awards Party, Carl’s Tavern (corner of 7th and Yampa Streets downtown) New Belgium Brewery beer, music, food & more

Aaron grew up paddling the rivers and lakes of Eastern Tennessee with his dad, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping out under the stars. Summer trips to Estes Park and high school ski trips had him hooked on Colorado from a young age, and he’s called the Rocky Mountains home since 1990. And while he has paddled in locales ranging from the Boundary Waters to the Rio Grande, from Belize to Kenya, his current backyard is Boulder Creek, in Nederland, Colo. Aaron was an editor at Paddler magazine from 1995 to 2000. He also did time as an editor at Sporting Goods Business, Blue Ridge Outdoors, Summit Daily News, Kickstand magazine, and is currently a contributing editor to numerous national outdoor, ski, bike, travel and outdoor-industry trade publications.
